#LeadingWithPurpose Spotlight: Ruth Sutton, Head of the School of Law and Social Justice at the University of Chester

Our #LeadingWithPurpose Spotlight interview series sees organisational leaders explain what leading with purpose means to them and how they strive to make their organisation a force for good in society.

In this episode, read how Ruth Sutton, Head of the School of Law & Social Justice at the University of Chester, does so.

What inspires you personally to lead with purpose?

I would really hope that my work in the world of education has a meaningful impact and inspires others in a shared purpose, helping to transform their lives.

Having purpose as an educator and a leader requires commitment to values that go beyond financial. It helps to have a clear understanding of what matters to you most in life. I am inspired by Simon Sinek’s emphasis on service to others as a powerful way to find purpose and fulfilment.

By serving others, we can solve our own problems and grow personally, having deeper human connections.

How did you find purpose in your work?

Holding onto your 'why' is crucial for finding purpose. I helped two students at different times, both troubled and failing university: the first was volunteering with me and I provided exam assistance for the other for his disability.

I took the time to sit talking with them and getting to know them. Both are now thriving - she's now pursuing a master's degree, and he's a tech entrepreneur. They stay in touch, reminding me why I do my work: my purpose is seeing potential and helping students from any background to transform their lives.

Why is your organisation committed to breaking down barriers to opportunity?

At the University of Chester, we aim to provide excellent accessible education and foster a supportive environment for students to thrive. We aim to enhance social mobility and contribute positively to the community through partnership, innovative teaching and research.

Our intake of students comes from really diverse communities. We want to reduce barriers to achievement ensuring all students coming from backgrounds of advantage or disadvantage have the same opportunities to access higher education, successfully study, get their degrees and then achieve great outcomes in employment.

We want to support different students, with different lifestyles, to transform their lives and achieve their full potential.
